iPhone 4S Insurance

Wednesday, December 14th, 2011

Getting a brand new iPhone 4S can be an exciting experience, but that euphoria can quickly turn to disappointment if you drop the phone. iPhone insurance is something everyone with an iPhone should invest in. These phones are not cheap to replace and Apple does not cover damage due to dropping the phone or submerging it in water. It also is nearly impossible to repair these phones yourself. It has to be done by a trained professional, and it will often cost more than the phone is worth.

The most common damage that occurs when an iPhone 4S is dropped is damage to the glass shell which covers the outside of the phone. It often cracks, which can make it very hard to read the screen and can even cause the screen to stop working all together. The back of the phone also has a glass cover on it which can crack if dropped or if the phone is placed in your back pocket and then sat on. This normally will not cause the phone to stop working, but is unsightly to look at, and the cracks can spread over time. Unfortunately, it is not possible to fix the screen yourself. The phone needs to be sent in to a service center, and this will cost a fair bit of money if you do not have insurance.

Another problem that can happen if the iPhone 4S is dropped is circuit board damage. This normally happens on falls from a higher distance and can often make the iPhone 4S totally useless. Much like the cracked glass screen, this is not a problem that can be fixed by the user of the device. The phone must once again be sent in for service if it does not have iPhone Insurance, and the extreme cost of fixing this problem makes it not worth the money in most cases.

Dropping your iPhone 4S in the pool or a puddle also is bad for the phone, especially if you do not have iPhone Insurance.  It is not water sealed at all, and water will seep in almost immediately. If the phone is on when this happens, it most likely will not survive being exposed to water and will need to be replaced. However, if the iPhone 4S is not powered on when it is submerged in water it often can be saved, though the warranty is voided by being exposed to water. If your iPhone 4 has been submerged, retrieve it as fast as possible and seal it in a bag full of rice. The rice helps wick the moisture away from the phone, which dries it out. Do not power the phone on while you are doing so, as this can cause a short-circuit, destroying the phone. Keep the phone in the rice for about a week. After that, take the iPhone 4 out and see if it powers on and works properly. You may just luck out and not have to replace it.

Of course, with an iPhone Insurance plan, none of these situations would be a huge deal. Simply call up the insurance company, tell them about your problem and you will have a new phone shipped out to you. There may be a deductible to pay depending on the plan, but this is usually far cheaper than having to replace the phone if it was not covered by your iPhone insurance.

JS Insurance has recently introduced a new scheme for iPhone Insurance which is an annual policy with a premium of £89.00 per year (£69.00 for the iphone 3G), which constitutes a monthly cost of £7.42 per month.

In making a comparison with retail outlets, we have found that their premiums are higher for the iPhone and even the monthly premium for a rolling contract is higher than the £5.99 we offer for all other phones including Blackberrys:

JS Insurance:  £7.42 per month (Annual policy only)

02:  £15.00 per month

Phones 4 U:  £13.99 per month

Vodafone:  £12.99 per month

Carphone Warehouse: £12.00 per month

Orange: £12.00 per month

All other mobile phone models including Blackberrys have a monthly direct debit premium of £6.99, where as the monthly premium offered by JS Insurance is £5.99.

Cover for Loss with Mobile Phone Insurance

Tuesday, August 24th, 2010

JS Insurance offers mobile phone insurance, which covers accidental damage, theft, liquid damage and unauthorised calls. One of the most often asked questions is:

Do we cover loss of a mobile phone?

We are unable to offer loss under our new policy and looking into other insurance policies, the cover for loss is rather limited and the terms and conditions does provide many situations in which loss is not covered.

Here is an example of a policy exclusions relating to loss:

  • Any loss from a commercial vehicle, or any motor vehicle where you or someone  acting on your behalf  is not in the vehicle, unless the mobile phone  is concealed in a locked boot, locked glove compartment or other locked internal compartment and all the vehicle’s windows and doors closed and locked and all security systems have been activated.
  • From any building, land, premises or vehicle unless force, resulting in damage to the building or premises, was used to gain entry or exit.
  • Where the mobile phone has been left unattended when it is away from your home.
  • Where reasonable precautions have not been taken.
  • Loss caused by neglecting the mobile phone.

This is basically covering your mobile phone for theft but not loss, using the words ‘neglect’ and ‘reasonable precautions’ means that almost any situation that involves loss of your mobile phone insurance would not be covered.

The iPhone 3G is insured for £69.00 and all other iPhones (including the iPhone 4) is £89.00 a year.  This new payment method has been introduced as a result of customer enquiries regarding paying the full premium up front rather than over a 12 month period.

iPhone Insurance

Thursday, March 5th, 2009

JS Insurance  is now offering mobile phone insurance for Apple iPhones. It has in the past been difficult to find insurance for iPhones, but as now more and more people are purchasing them and as they are now also available as pay as you go as well as on a contract bases, it seems sensible to now offer the same type of cover as a standard mobile phone.

There are a few differences relating to this type of mobile phone insurance compared to the insurance already offered by us.

There is a specific contract between Apple and 02, when you purchase an iPhone. If you need to make a claim, we would not be able to replace the phone itself, but would let you purchase a replacement iPhone and then we would reimburse you for the cost of a new phone. This would only be the case if the phone was beyond repair or had been stolen.

Our dedicated repair centres would be able to repair the iPhone as would be the case with any mobile phone repair.

If you wished to have a look at the policy details and purchase the insurance, please go to our mobile phone insurance page or call us on 0844 848 1500 and we will be happy to arrange the cover.
