Do I need Travel Insurance if I have an EHIC (European Health Insurance Card)?

Monday, February 14th, 2011

This is following on from an article in The Sunday Times (13.02.11)regarding Travel Insurance and the benefits of the EHIC card.

If you have an EHIC card and you are travelling within The European Economic Area and Switzerland, then the EHIC card does cover most medical expenses.  This card will not cover for accommodation if you are abroad and are unable to return to the UK, because of illness or accident. It does not cover repatriation costs back to the UK.

EHIC Card cover depends on the country you are in.

In countries such as Austria, France and Germany, the medical expenses are only partly covered by the EHIC card, whereas Travel Insurance will cover all costs.

In Spain, there is no compensation of medical expenses with the EHIC Card

So this is a very hit and miss choice, one advantage of purchasing Travel Insurance is that all medical expenses are covered as well as repatriation.

If you do have an EHIC card, we do waiver the excess for medical expenses if you purchase JS Travel Insurance.

If you have pre existing medical conditions, we can provide cover online with  our new website JS Medical Insurance.

Cuba ‘compulsory insurance’ update

Wednesday, May 5th, 2010

From 1st May travellers arriving in Cuba would be required to purchase Cuba Health Insurance, and those arriving without proper cover, would be required to buy an appropriate policy from a Cuban insurance company at the airport, port, or marina where they arrive.

A list of approved insurance companies had been released in April.

The Cuban Ministry of Foreign Affiars has now published on its website taht rather than establishing an approved list of insurers, as originally proposed, it now simply requires people entering the country to have a policy that includes health cover for people visiting Cuba.

The requirement to purchase a Cuban insurance policy will only apply to those with Cuban exclusions in their policy.

We recommend that travellers will just need to ensure they have their policy documents to hand when arriving in Cuba as they may be checked by the authorities.

‘Compulsory Insurance’ fo Cuba

Thursday, April 22nd, 2010

In March, the Cuban government decided that all travellers arriving in Cuba from 1st May 2010 and beyond would be required to purchase Cuba health insurance.

Tourists, Foreigners with temporary residence in Cuba and Cubans living abroad who return to visit will have to have a travel insurance policy that covers medical expenses or a policy for medical expenses with coverage in Cuba.

The insurance policy would be purchased in the traveller’s home country but for those tourists arriving without proper cover, they will be required to buy an appropriate policy from a Cuban insurance company at the airport, port or marina where they arrive.

In early April a list of approved insurance companies was released, which mostly consists of assistance companies rather than insurance companies.

AXA Insurance in conjunction with AXA Assistance have written confirmation from Cuban Assistance Company ‘ASISTUR’ certifying that travellers are fully covered by AXA policies and will not be required to buy additional insurance upon arrival.

ASISTUR is the AXA Assistance Group (AXA Assistance, AXA Travel Insurance and Inter Partner Assistance) representative in Cuba.

Travellers will just need to ensure they have their policy documents to hand when arriving in Cuba as they may be checked by ASISTUR.

Update on Swine Flu and Travel Insurance

Monday, July 20th, 2009

If you have concerns regarding Swine Flu and travel, then please read the following information about Swine Flu and Travel Insurance.

Before you travel, you should firstly make sure that you are aware of the most up-to-date Swine Flu travel advice from the Foreign and Commonwealth Office and the World Health Organisation. Both of these organisations give the very latest, official and most reliable information available.

It is also important to remember that Travel Insurance policies do not cover any individual for travel to countries which the FCO and/or WHO advises against all but essential travel. For your own safety, you should always check the status of the country to which you are travelling by visiting that country information page on the FCO website.

Some of our policies will provide cover for cancellation of your trip if you have been diagnosed by a medical practitioner with having contracted Swine Flu, or if you have been quarantined by a medical practitioner and develop Swine Flu.

If you have travel insurance, which includes Cancellation or Curtailment cover, and have booked your trip, but then contract Swine Flu and are consequently unable to travel, you will be covered for the cancellation of your holiday, subject to you providing proof that you were ill and unfit to travel at the time of your scheduled departure date. A certificate should be obtained from your medical practitioner to confirm this. Where a diagnosis has been made by the National Pandemic Flu service we will need the unique number from the service together with the original copy of the label from the prescribed anti-flu drugs.

However, please be aware that there is no cover for cancellation of your holiday if you have not been diagnosed with Swine Flu and simply do not wish to travel to your holiday destination for fear of contracting Swine Flu.

Our policy will provide cover under the medical section, this will extend to cover if you are quarantined and develop Swine Flu, e.g. you can’t fly home for fear of passing on to others and are confined to your accommodation. The costs of this will be met, as will the cost of the return flight but this will only be upon prior approval from the assistance company.

If you contract Swine Flu while you are away and need medical assistance your policy will cover you within its limits. In addition, the costs of any quarantine or alternative return flight as recommended by your doctor and the assistance company will be covered.
